Accessory Dwellings

A one-stop source about accessory dwelling units, multigenerational homes, laneway houses, ADUs, granny flats, in-law units…

Books for beginners

I like to think this site gives you a good idea of what ADUs are.  But there are some books out there that are excellent resources too, showing how these dwellings look and work.  I recommend:

  • Michael Litchfield’s ADU’s, Inlaws, Outlaws & Granny Flats. This provides a great illustration of the major forms of ADUs (garage conversion, basement apartment, etc) and dozens of detailed accounts, photos, and drawings of real projects.  Nothing on costs or financing, but lots of tips on higher-quality construction techniques.
  • Shay Salomon’s  Little House On A Small Planet. While not specifically about ADUs, it takes a more grassroots approach to small-house development and house-sharing arrangements that is very relevant to ADUs.
