A one-stop source about accessory dwelling units, multigenerational homes, laneway houses, ADUs, granny flats, in-law units…
Yestermorrow Design-Build School has been offering Home Design courses for forty years to help people envision a home of their own, and communicate that design graphically, so they can work with contractors, subcontractors, lenders, and permitting. Over the past 10 years Yestermorrow has also added to the curriculum: Tiny House Design, Tiny House Design (Online), Tiny House Design-Build, and Tiny House Design-Build Certificate. Participants have designed ADUs – backyard cottages, in-law suites, carve-out apartments, guest houses, and more – in all of these courses over the years.
Now Yestermorrow is offering a dedicated Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Design course. If this is the year to design your ADU, consider taking this course! The ADU Design course will be available in both in-person and online formats this year:
Accessory Dwelling Unit Design (ADUD) will help you envision and design a backyard cottage, guest house, or in-law suite that meets your needs. We’ll virtually tour noteworthy accessory dwellings, spark a dialogue about space-saving strategies, and engage in an imaginative process with interactive design exercises. In the “design studio” you’ll learn a variety of tools to help you communicate your ideas. Students completing this course will have the skills necessary to continue work on their own ADU projects. Bring your curiosity, enthusiasm, and project ideas!
I look forward to collaborating with Missa Aloisi of Hinge Architecture, as well as guest speakers, to offer this course. Missa has designed a number of ADUs in the Burlington, VT area and has been an ADU advocate in our region. When I taught weekend ADU Design courses through Portland Community College the time always seemed to fly by, so the longer format will be helpful for people to dive deep and develop a custom design for their very own ADU! Hope to see you there!
