Here are a few of the best nonacademic references about ADUs–besides the stories on this site, of course.
- Michael Litchfield’s book about ADU’s, Inlaws, Outlaws & Granny Flats, provides a great explication of the major forms of ADUs (garage conversion, basement apartment, etc) and dozens of detailed accounts, photos, and drawings of real projects.
- Shay Salomon’s book Little House On A Small Planet is also a great resource. While not specifically about ADUs, it takes a more grassroots approach to small-house development and house-sharing arrangements that is very relevant to ADUs.
- We might modestly also recommend the blog Kol Peterson (an editor here on accessorydwellings.org) made for his own ADU project… it is extremely detailed.
For even more technical and research detail, check out the “Accessory Dwellings” section of the Space-Efficient Housing zotero database.
